For the second time in three years the Pirates have become A-division champions.
The grand final was an exciting encounter which had the large crowd on the edge of their seats. The first period saw Pirates jump to an early 1-0 lead after #19 Arvid Johansson made a few moves out of defence only to find more space up forward to release a shot top corner giving the goalie no chance. The Sharks took away the Pirates lead with 20 seconds left in the period on the power play by a well placed shot by Sharks player Oliver Diffen.
The second period saw a battle of the goalies as both team peppered the net with chances both on power plays and even strength but neither team was to get the better of the goalies in this period. Both teams also played very tight defence limiting the chance for turnovers.
The third period started well for the Sharks when they played a pass to an unmarked player (Sam Clairs) in front of the Pirates net for an easy shot placed in the back of the net. The play then got more desperate for both teams as the Sharks tried to close the game and the Pirates trying to get back in. The Sharks took a playing on the ground penalty and the Pirates took full advantage when #10 Melvin Tng scored from a neat set up by #16 Tuukka Heina. The play continued at a high pace until Pirates player John Carroll took his second penalty of the game. This might have played into Sharks hands if they had executed their power play better, but because they seemed too cautious it gave the Pirates a chance to attack the ball carrier giving up two break away goals to #3 Jonathon Veron. The Pirates added one more goal by #5 Derek Kippo to seal the victory. Sharks tried everything they could to get back into the game, but even when the Pirates were again a man down in the final minutes of the game they couldn’t get any ground back.
Pirates Win the PFL A-Division with a score of 5-2
